Between the idioms of two heads being better than one, and a problem shared is a problem halved, it’s understandable to think that bringing another person into the mix may improve your chances of a solution, and faster too.

Brooke’s law states that adding people to a software project will only stand to make it later, whilst Conway’s law states our communication patterns will leave an indelible mark on our product development lifecycles. 

How can we build systems and design teams that aren’t hindered by these two laws? Well, the answer can be found in gaming. 

In this talk, we’ll delve into the results of an MIT study that sought to understand the concept of collective intelligence in the context of virtual teams. We’ll discuss how to keep your teams small, what to consider in the team selection process and how to offset the inevitable upping of cognitive load.
